Camouflage was an experimental performance set in Lowe's home improvement store in Chico, California. For this performance, I set out to navigate through the hardware store without the employees becoming aware that I was constructing a mobile sculpture. As I ventured through the aisles, I collected the materials I needed to assemble Dolly. My goal was to engross myself in this stereotypically masculine space and construct a sculpture without my actions ever being questioned. I donned the costume of the typical male customer of Lowe's: an orange shirt, work boots, and a company branded jacket and hat. This performance allowed me to explore the power of my masculine authority. I was able to ward off employees and express my authority over all things in the store.
Dolly was more than a prop. Dolly not only provided me with the camouflage to blend in and appear occupied as I navigated this typically masculine space; Dolly was also a camera dolly. In fact, Dolly was used to record our journey to the lawnmower display.
